Owned by the team behind The Star of Bethnal Green and The Star by Hackney Downs, the latest addition to the group is The Star of Kings, a boozer is tucked away behind Kings Cross station. Just by Granary Square.
It’s more well known for its rotating food policy, where it hosts a new pop-up street food dining experience every three months. So when Yeah Burger announced that it was set to open a Pop Up at The Star of Kings, we couldn’t refuse this opportunity to visit.
Downstairs in the basement is a new club, boasting a pretty powerful Funktion-One sound system that’s used for weekly club nights, including a Dance night every Thursday. Probably also worth mentioning that the club also hosts smaller comedy nights and similar.
In terms of our thoughts, we could wrap it up this review in a word. Dive. And not a fun, cool, hipster dive like Slim Jim’s Liquor Store. But just cruddy.
Half of the beers on draught weren’t on. From reading other comments about the pub, it seems that they’ve just simply never been on. There was also a notable lack of ales available. As one of our group remarked, it’s basically a pub that had no beer. Thank god for Gin!
But at least the food was worthwhile? The burgers….meh. The buns were burnt and the chips cold but these were kindly reheated for us.
The one thing that does work for it is that you can get 20% off food and drink every Wednesday by signing up for a Local’s Card , which you can pick up from the bar when you visit. Just make sure to get them to swipe it every time you order.
Would we again? Not if we can avoid it.
